  • If you like more savory dishes let us know. Sometimes Nasi jinggo is available: rice with shredded fried chicken, egg, serundeng (roasted grated coconut) and some sambal (chili sauce).

  • Fresh coffee and tea you can make yourself!

We are happy to adjust to your personal preferences where possible, just let us know.

Lunch and Dinner

We work together with the local community to serve some authentic local dishes, for lunch or dinner. Note that we need preparation time for all meals, so please let us know well in advance if you would like us to arrange a meal.

  • Entil: a local Pupuan specialty. Flavored rice cake steamed in Kalingidi leaves and served in a tasty broth, with shredded chicken, peanuts, egg, local vegetables and fried vegetable cakes. Perfect for lunch, but also as a light dinner!

  • Sate Babi: pork skewers, served with hot chili sauce and lontong, rice cake steamed in banana leaves.

  • Gurame Nyat Nyat: Gourami fish grilled in local spices, served with steamed rice and vegetables (dinner only).

  • Nasi Campur: steamed rice with a variety of local side dishes, usually including Satay (skewers), chicken, and different vegetables.

For dinner we have some additional choice, made at our home. Availability depends on what is available at local markets.

  • Our signature Balinese dinner: 2 or 3 different vegetables, fried chicken, pork satay or sausage, a local fish specialty, tempe (fermented soybeans) and different sambal. This menu may vary depending on what is locally available.

  • Nasi / Mie Goreng: fried rice / noodles with pork satay, fried chicken, fried egg, tempe (fermented soybeans) and sambal (chili sauce).

  • Ramen: wheat noodles served in a broth, topped with seaweed, sesame seeds, a soft-boiled egg and crisps.

  • Vietnamese noodles: a noodle salad with chicken and spring-rolls.

There are only 2 restaurants nearby:

  • Warung D’Bucu / Beji Balian: 1.6 km to the north, along the main road. Offers the largest choice, and particularly fish is recommended.

  • Warung Dedy: 1.9 km to the south, along the main road. Offers Entil, a local specialty from Pupuan, as well as Nasi Campur.

A few local warung also sometimes offer Nasi Campur, Satay and Bakso as take-away.

We have a gas barbecue for rent. If you wish to organize a barbecue on your terrace we need a day advanced notice and can discuss what you would like us to prepare.

Mini Bar

We provide bottled drinking water and a few soft and other drinks in the mini-bar.

All non-alcoholic drinks are free of charge.

Small Bintang beer: IDR 30,000 / bottle.

Large Bintang or Singaraja beer: IDR 45,000 / bottle.

Let us know when you run out of drinking water or would like more beer in your mini-bar.

Coffee & Tea

Pupuan is famous for its coffee and we provide local Robusta and seasonally also Arabica roasted beans. Taste the difference, or mix them together!

We also provide fine ground coffee and a variety of imported and local tea.

COFFEE GRINDER

You can grind the coffee beans fresh and to your liking.

You can turn around the coffee bean holder to choose from a fine grind to a medium or large coarse, in 31 different steps!

  • Plug the grinder into a power socket.

  • Choose your grind: for the espresso machine 3; for French Press around 28-30, for filter coffee around 16 and if you like to drink the coffee as the locals do, direct in your cup, use 1.

  • Press the SET button.

  • Press the + and – buttons to determine the amount of coffee to grind: for espresso 5, for French press around 6, for filter coffee use 5 for 1 cup, 10 for 2 cups.

  • Press the right button to grind.

  • Grind beans fresh for each brew and only as much as you want to use. Ground coffee loses taste fast when exposed to air.

ESPRESSO MACHINE

To really enjoy Pupuan coffee we provide a fully automatic espresso machine in your tent.

If you would like to make cappuccino or latte please ask us for pasteurized milk, if it’s not in your minibar. We usually have some, but not always.

If you know how to use an espresso machine, here the short HOW-TO-BREW version:

  • Make sure you have enough water in the Espresso machine water tank!

  • Put the Portafilter in place: place the handle in line with the unlock sign and turn towards the lock sign.

  • Press the (left) On / Off button and wait until you see the following display:

  • Select a single or double cup (2nd and 3rd button); the machine will automatically dose the amount of coffee brew.

  • Note: the 4th button is for manual dosing: when you use this button you have to push a 2nd time to stop the brewing.

  • To steam milk: press the Steam button (5th button). Wait until you see the following screen:

  • You are ready to steam milk.

  • Use a half wet towel to cover the steam nozzle and clear any remaining water before steaming milk. Repeat this once you are done, to clean the nozzle from any milk remains.

  • BE CAREFUL, you know that the steam nozzle gets VERY hot!

  • Switch off the Steam button and then the power button.

Notes:

  • If you want more than 1 cup of coffee and plan to steam milk for a cappuccino or latte then brew all coffee first, as after you steam milk the machine needs time to cool down before it’s ready to brew coffee again.

  • When you switch off the Steam button you will see “E-2” blink on the display, which means the machine is too hot to brew coffee. You jus have to wait until he display changes again to 92 degrees.

If you have never used an espresso machine before we are happy to show you how to use it, or click below manual for a step-by-step HOW-TO-BREW:

  • Make sure you have enough water in the Espresso machine water tank!

  • Fill the Portafilter with 1 scoop of freshly ground coffee. We recommend about 16-16.5 gram (you have a weight scale in the minibar cabinet). Do not completely fill the filter basket, leave at least 3-4 mm empty.

  • Place the Portafilter in the left hole in the wooden coffee tamper stand.

  • Push the black Distributor level into the Portafilter and turn around about 90 degrees, applying light pressure. This is to level the coffee grind. If the coffee is not yet level, repeat.

  • Push the metal Tamper level into the Portafilter, turn around about 180 degrees while applying decent pressure. This is to compact the coffee grind and remove air.

  • Place the Portafilter in the Espresso Machine: fit it in place with the handle of the Portafilter at the unlock sign, then turn to the middle at the lock sign:

  • Press the (left) On / Off button and wait until you see the following display:

  • Place your coffee cup under the Portafilter.

  • Select a single or double cup (2nd and 3rd button); the machine will automatically dose the amount of coffee.

  • Note: the 4th button is for manual dosing: when you use this button you have to push a 2nd time to stop the brewing.

  • If you want espresso, you are ready. Enjoy!

  • If you want cappuccino or latte, continue!

  • Poor milk in the milk Jug; we recommend about 100-125 ml. There is a scale inside the Jug.

  • To steam milk: press the (right) Steam button. Wait until you see the following screen:

  • You are ready to steam milk.

  • Use a damp / half wet Towel and wrap around the steam Nozzle. Make sure you fold the towel a few times!

  • BE CAREFUL NOW: turn the Steam Knob, on the right side of the machine, fast and counter-clockwise halfway, and immediately back: this is to clean the Nozzle from hot water. Be very careful, as the water and steam are VERY hot. Do NOT hold your hand direct under the opening of the Nozzle!

  • You are now ready to steam milk. Hold the milk Jug at an angle under the steam Nozzle; make sure the Nozzle is submerged in the milk, just a little below the surface. Not too deep!

  • Turn the steam Knob fast and now fully counter-clockwise: steam comes out and heats up the milk.

  • Let the steam flow for about 25 seconds and regularly check the temperature of the bottom of the Jug with your hand. When the Jug starts to get hot submerge the Nozzle as far as possible into the Jug, almost touching the bottom, for another 15-20 seconds. When the Jug is almost too hot to hold, close the steam Knob. Your steamed milk is ready.

  • Use again the damp Towel and clean the Nozzle. Make sure to fold the towel a few times, as the Nozzle is VERY hot. Then turn the Steam Knob again 2 times fast and counter-clockwise halfway, and immediately back: this is to clean the Nozzle from any remaining milk.

  • Pour the hot milk in your espresso.

  • A traditional cappuccino has an even distribution of espresso, steamed milk, and foamed milk. A latte has more steamed milk and a light layer of foam.
A cappuccino is distinctly layered, while in a latte the espresso and steamed milk are mixed together.

  • Your cappuccino or latte is ready, enjoy!

  • Note: If you want more than 1 cup of coffee and plan to steam milk for a cappuccino or latte then brew all coffee first, as after you steam milk the machine needs time to cool down before it’s ready to brew coffee again.

  • Note: When you switch off the Steam button you will see “E-2” blink on the display, which means the machine is too hot to brew coffee. You jus have to wait until he display changes again to 92 degrees.

KNOCK BOX

Of course you can clean the Portafilter just under the tap, or use the dedicated Knock Box.

  • Knock the Portafilter a few times firm on the round bar of the knock box, until (most of) the coffee falls out.

  • Clean out the remaining coffee with a tissue.

FRENCH PRESS COFFEE MAKER

  • Take out the Plunge from the French Press.

  • Put 1 scoop per cup of coffee of course ground coffee in the French Press.

  • Poor enough hot water, between 93-96 degrees, to completely soak the coffee ground, and wait 45 seconds.

  • Poor more hot water, for either 1 or 2 cups of coffee. Wait 4 minutes.

  • Put in the Plunge, and slowly press all the way down.

  • Your coffee is ready!

WATER KETTLE

The water kettle comes with a temperature gauge, for a perfect cup of coffee or tea.

Coffee: for coffee brewing the ideal temperature of the water is between 92-96 degrees Celsius.

Tea: for the tea sachets the best temperature is between 90-98 degrees Celsius. For the rosella tea you should use boiling water.

Sounds: you will hear an orchestra of animal sounds and we hope you like this as much as we do. This includes a variety of frogs, crickets, cicadas, tokay gecko, bats, owls and green jungle-fowl, a nowadays fairly rare wild chicken, and occasionally a goat or cow from the other side of the valley.

You may occasionally also hear our dogs, apologies for that. They are good guards!

Night Sky: nights can be very clear here, with little light pollution. When the moon is not too bright the Milky Way is then clearly visible, and you’ll also regularly see meteors, shooting stars. Go out for a short evening walk along the road, and see for yourself!
